Rent mobility equipment in Los Angeles

For the best views of the famous Hollywood sign, or LA from above, you’ll need to head to the Griffith Observatory.  Besides the views you get from this vantage point, the Observatory itself is pretty awesome, with various astronomy displays, and a planetarium show. This is also a beautiful place to visit at night, where you can watch the lights of LA twinkling below you, then go in and observe the stars above from the free public telescopes that are there. If you happen to be in LA at the right time, you could even take part in one of the free monthly star parties that are held there, which bring astronomers and the public together to observe the sun, planets, and stars.

The Griffith Observatory is accessible, but be warned that it gets really busy and just getting into the park (which Griffith Observatory is part of) can take a long time. Don’t go if you’re in a rush, but know that you’ll get there and get parked eventually (in an accessible space) and it will have been well worth the wait and frustrations to get there.

The beaches in LA are super cool, and when you’re on the sands at Santa Monica, or walking the famous boardwalk, you can’t help but feel excited. Expect to see lots of gorgeous tanned Californians skating past you on rollerblades, or surfing those famous waves, and of course the attractions on the pier are all there just like you see in the movies. There are plenty of places to grab a hotdog or a healthy lunch at one of the Perry’s Café locations along the Boardwalk. Visiting Santa Monica is a quintessential LA experience, and gives you a real taste of how the locals love to play and relax, far from the traffic-jams and hustle and bustle of downtown LA.

What’s extra cool is how accessible Santa Monica Beach is to those with mobility issues. There are ramps leading onto the beach and boardwalks, which is great, but the beach also offers all-terrain wheelchairs so you can actually get out on the sand free of change – how great is that? These are available at two locations on the Boardwalk.

If doing a little celebrity spotting is high on your list of priorities when you’re visiting Los Angeles, then The Grove is a great place to try looking for one. The Grove is basically an upscale outdoor mall and entertainment complex full of great restaurants, and it has an outdoor stage where there’s usually some free entertainment (and this could well be the latest chart sensation belting out songs from his or her latest album). There’s also a dancing water fountain that shoots jets of water 60 ft into the air to the sounds of Dean Martin, Kool and the Gang, and Lionel Ritchie, and an accessible tourist trolley that you can take a ride on around The Grove.

The Grove is fully accessible, and even if you can’t find a disabled parking space there’s very reasonably priced parking for the complex (with validation offered by some retailers). Valet parking is also available at The Grove.

Spanning two Los Angeles locations, The Getty Centre offers art collections, architectural wonders, incredible views out over the city, and beautiful gardens to explore. What can you see here? So much! From Vincent Van Gogh’s Irises to works by Cézanne, Manet, 20th Century photography, illuminated manuscripts, and sculptural pieces housed both in and outside of the Center. There is a lot to see, so be sure to give yourself enough time to take it all in. Riding the tram up the hillside from the parking lot to the Center gives amazing views of the gorgeous homes that you pass on the way up, and downtown Los Angeles below.

All areas of The Getty Center are accessible, and you’ll have no trouble getting around with a wheelchair (even on and off the trams, wheelchair users are provided for). Standard wheelchairs are available for visitors use, and are found at the lower tram station, which you use to access the Center from the parking lot.
