Old San Juan is one of the most visited tourist areas in the city. This historic district is a must-visit during your trip to Puerto Rico and is filled with cobblestone streets, colonial buildings, and iconic fortresses, including El Morro and San Cristobal. The area was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, and along with its rich history, it also offers fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean and of San Juan itself. Today, Old San Juan is bustling with museums, shops, and restaurants, allowing you to soak in the charms of this seaside city.

Unfortunately, the things that make Old San Juan special – namely its historic architecture – are also what make it difficult to traverse for people with limited mobility. Cobblestone streets, narrow walkways, and steep hills may be pretty to look at, but they can be a nightmare for mobility device users. We recommend booking a large, 4-wheeled mobility device, such as an HD or Standard Scooter, and always travelling with a companion.

The Port of San Juan is one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean and serves as a gateway for many cruise ships and other vessels. The port is located right beside Old San Juan, making it easy to disembark from a cruise ship and quickly explore some of the city’s most famous attractions. Many of the world’s major cruise lines make stops in the Port of San Juan – including Norwegian, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and more – meaning you’ll have no shortage of options if you want to visit the city via the sea.

Follow all instructions from your specific cruise line when embarking and disembarking from the ship. Equipment should never be used on uneven hills or steep areas like gangways. Always get off and walk the scooter up and down those areas. Wheelchairs and scooters for cruise passengers can be booked online or over the phone.

Condado is a popular beach destination for locals and tourists alike. Known for its beautiful sand and warm blue waters, it's a fantastic place for sunbathing, snorkeling, and sightseeing. The beach itself is a 10-to-15-minute drive from Old San Juan and is located near many hotels, casinos, shops, and restaurants, making it easy to access from the city. If you plan to go swimming, please check the conditions for that day, as the beach can often have a strong undertow. If swimming isn’t your thing, enjoy some food and drinks at a beachfront bar or explore the seaside walking path for stunning views of the ocean.

Condado Beach is (fittingly) located within the Condado neighborhood, providing you with direct access to shopping, restaurants, and hotels, the majority of which are scooter and wheelchair accessible. The beach also has several wheelchair accessible paths along the shore.

El Morro (officially known as “Castillo San Felipe del Morro”) is an imposing fortress located at the northernmost tip of the Old San Juan island. Built in the 16th-century, the complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and remains one of San Juan’s most iconic landmarks and tourist attractions. The structure sits on the edge of rocky cliffs and offers fabulous views of the ocean, the city, and San Juan Bay.

The fortress is open to the public, allowing visitors to check out the impressive cannons, towers, and walls, which are up to 25 feet thick in some places. Like the rest of Old San Juan, it can be a challenge for scooter and wheelchair users to reach the fort itself, but once you’re there, the main areas of the complex are surprisingly wheelchair friendly. The fort has pathways and ramps for mobility devices, as well as accessible restrooms. The main plaza also has accessible exhibits, a theater, and a bookstore.
