Fort Lauderdale Attractions: Insider Mobility Information
Hollywood Beach Boardwalk
Travel and Leisure Magazine named Hollywood Beach Boardwalk one of America’s Best Beach Boardwalks, and when you explore this 2.5 mile stretch of well-maintained boardwalk you can see why. Besides the fact that you have that beautiful beach beside you, there’s an abundance of great places to eat, neat little shops to browse, and free live music and performances five nights a week at the Hollywood Beach Theatre just steps from the sand.
What makes this attraction especially fun for those with mobility issues is that so much attention has gone into making the boardwalk, and beach, accessible to everyone. You’ll find beach wheelchairs available for public use at the lifeguard stations, lots of accessible parking and accessible washrooms, and mobi-mats available to help wheelchairs onto the beach. Everyone feels welcome at this beach.
Museum of Discovery and Science
If you’re looking for a place to spend a rainy day, or just to get away from the heat, the Museum of Discovery and Science is the perfect place to go. There are lots of interactive exhibits that allow you to get hands on with science, including nine cockpit simulators and a chance to experience what it feels like in a hurricane in the Storm Centre. There’s also an aquarium featuring sharks and the largest living Atlantic coral reef in captivity, a really cute otter habitat, and exciting science theatre shows to check out.
On top of this, the Museum of Discovery and Science is home to a giant (60ft x 80ft) IMAX 3D theatre, where you can watch special features and new release Hollywood blockbusters. The museum is fully wheelchair accessible.
NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale
Located in downtown Fort Lauderdale, the NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale has really interesting programming that encompasses events such as wine tastings, talks on art and culture, family activities, as well as of course permanent and visiting art collections. The NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale has more than 6000 works in its permanent collection, including some by leading Latin American artists such as Diego Riviera, Candido Portinari and Francisco Toledo. There is also a significant ceramics collection with works from the likes of Pablo Picasso and other renowned modern artists. Because the museum hosts so many visiting shows, there’s always something new to take in each time you visit.
All areas of the museum are accessible, including restrooms, the museum store and café (which is a really sweet place to stop for a coffee and sandwich, with seating both inside and outside in the breezeway).
Butterfly World
Wander through beautiful gardens amongst thousands of brightly-hued butterflies and various tropical birds at Butterfly World. Spot hummingbirds, orchids, and all manner of exotic flora and insects making their home here. This attraction is so very pretty, and there’s a very good chance that the butterflies will land on you, which is a magical experience, and you may even get similar treatment from the birds too. There are outdoor cafes on-site that offer a gorgeous place to stop and observe all the beauty around you.
All areas of Butterfly World are wheelchair accessible, so you’ll have no trouble seeing everything at this lovely attraction. With both indoor and outdoor areas it can get warm at Butterfly World, so plan to go early when the heat won’t be such a big issue and won’t diminish any enjoyment from your visit.
